Cold Hard
Circuit
Zealots
Earn Their Stripes!
The ride started from Ariail Tire with the temperatures in the artic range with hurricane force winds. Riding on this day you earned your stripes as a true zealot. The circuit loop planned was a thirteen point two mile loop, thirteen even would have been unlucky, and a sprint challenge was held on every lap except the first. The first lap was used as an attempt to warm up and to identify the sprint line to all contestants. Zealots appearing to do battle in the artic storm conditions included the overall series leader Shooting Star Bridges. Andy the Train Brackett, Scott Landis-Hefner, Sammy Habersham Hammer, Old Man Burch, Puddin Cantrel, Old School Coker, Steven Drafter Dean, Bad Brad Lewallen, Whaaaa Lilly, Dude Mahon, Iron Man, Meat Grinder, Flying C Ross, Lightning Bug, and Mountain Man Stan White all gritted their teeth and hunkered down for a hard but fun training ride. Puddin Cantrel began the ride with ear buds in hoping to keep his inner ear warm with tunes from the 80’s. The Habersham Hammer kept asking him what he had on the I-Pod and Kim’s reply was “Yeah I like pudding.” The howling wind and the ear buds kept Kim from actually hearing anything that was said. After the ceremonial lap around Mt. Airy, the pack strung out contesting the sprint line on Hwy 123. Some United Community Bank team riders worked on pace line tactics while others just used pure power to make their way to the line. A majority of the sprints were won by Andy the Train Brackett who rode like a bullet train. The use of this circuit will be revisited during the spring for race simulation. Iron Man rode today like a big magnet was pulling him to the front. Anytime the pace picked up Iron Man was on the front challenging sprints and he was the animator for the final attack zone. All agreed that Iron Man was today’s Most Aggressive rider award winner. Must have been them fancy Zipp 404 tubular wheels he road that made him so fast. The attack zone finish was the good old Tuesday Night Throw down finish at the Cornelia CLS. Shooting Star shot across the line jumping for the line at the Pabst Blue Ribbon sign and powering across the line first for the one millionth time. Encouraging riders to go fast was the trophy cookie the size of a small cake waiting back at the station. Lovely Lisa Mahon created yet another baking sensation consisting of everything good including chocolate chips. The Big Cookie went to Shooter while the remainder of the pack had the normal size cookies. Shooter also earned a prize packet from Mayfield Dairy Farms for free premium milk and ice cream. Most riders ate several cookies while others ate many. The competition committee met and agreed to award all riders that started with the same points and accreditation as a true WCL zealot. Riders earning extra points were Shooting Star Bridges for the attack zone win, Andy the Train Brackett for the most sprint wins, and Iron Man for the Most Aggressive rider.
