BACK for 2008

We will be going to a 5 category system for 2008.  The categories will be Women, Open, Licensed Racer,  Over 40, and Ability-Based Handicap. Each Category winner will be awarded Gift Cards  for each week.

TIMING AND RULES

Sign in 6:15 PM BC Grant Baptist Church.

First rider departs promptly at 6:45 PM.

There will be no charge for this event.  Riders will ride at their own risk.  The only responsibility of HABERSHAM BICYCLES, UCBI Cycling Team, AG Edwards or any other party is to provide a departure point, timing for your ride, and suggested route.  Ride will be limited to the FIRST 40 RIDERS to sign up. Reservations can be made at Habersham Bicycles ( 706-894-BIKE) until 3:00 PM on the day of the event.  Otherwise, it will be first come first serve.  All riders must sign a waiver and wear a USCF approved helmet.  Since there is no charge, all riders are asked to help with timing after their ride is completed.

Riders will depart at one minute or 30 second intervals depending on number of riders.  Each rider will be assigned a departure time at sign in.  The clock will start and the first rider will leave at 1 minute.  The rider's finish time will be recorded and his or her start time and handicap will be subtracted to calculate the total time.  Timing for each rider will begin with the departure time so riders should be ready when their time comes.  It should also be noted that we will not stop traffic at each turn.  All riders must be aware of traffic at these turns.  There is good sight distance at all turns to allow riders to merge with traffic.  Be careful!  Your safety is in your own hands.  All riders will have the same chance of facing traffic, so it is up to luck of the draw.

If a rider deviates from the course in any manner they will receive a DNF and no time will be awarded. THERE IS NO DRAFTING ALLOWED.

Ability-Based Handicap Series Rules

This event should be a competition in which every rider has a chance to win. The handicap is calculated from a rider's fastest time. The actual calculation is essentially the same as that devised by the British Cycling Time Trials organization (until recently known as the Road Time Trials Council or RTTC).

In general terms, an arbitrary base time is subtracted from a rider's best time to determine the actual handicap.

The exact calculation is as follows (with example):

Rider's best performance this year -

22:49

Less the standard time for the distance -

17:00

This yields the Gross Handicap -

5:49

This gives the handicap, which will be used to determine the rider's effective time on race day. It should be noted that the Cycling Time Trials organization uses 17:00 as the standard time for a 10-mile time trial on a flat course.

Name Finish Start Handicap Total
Rider 1 33:02.21 1 13:22 18:82.21
Rider 2 33:21.22 2 12:12 19:09.22

For the first event, the final handicap from the previous year will apply.  After one event, the rider's individual handicap will be recalculated.

If a rider has no performances there will be no handicap.

If a rider deviates from the course in any manner they will receive a DNF and no time will be awarded. THERE IS NO DRAFTING ALLOWED.

If a rider's best time is lower than the standard time, this calculation will result in a negative handicap!

Please if your not racing consider volunteering on a rotation base. You can click here to volunteer.

Competition Committee Announcement!

The number of riders taking part in the Race of Truth is growing by leaps and bounds. To make the event precede smoother a couple of adjustments were required.

Registration for the Race of Truth is simple. If you are participating in this free event for the first time then call Habersham Bicycles in advance. New riders will start last in their category until they have established a time for seeding.

The competition committee met and decided to continue with a tradition of limiting the number of times a single rider can win his category and collect the bounty. If a rider wins three events then after the third win the prize money gets donated to the church which hosts the event. All subsequent winnings after three go to the church. The limit is for monetary rewards only. The winning rider still gets the recognition as the champion with a picture on this website  regardless of how many wins they are able to achieve. As always the winner from each category gets their name added an extra time into the pool following every win for the end of year swag give away!

You do not keep your number. The 27 min rule, which I mentioned may be changed to keep fields competitive.

We are still negotiating for a pair of wheels for are traditional wheel give away.

We also have a new set of road wheels which will be given away at the end of the series to one lucky rider. These wheels will be given through a drawing.  You will be automatically added to the drawing one time for each race you come to. For each win,  your name will be added to the pot twice.  On August 30,  I will draw the lucky winner from this list. You must race in AT LEAST 5 RACES  to be considered for ANY of the Series awards.

For example: you race 6 times this year and you win two different times.  your name will be entered in the drawing 10 times.  As you can see winning will improve your odds however coming to every event will also improve your odds.  Best of Luck to all and THANKS for making the RACE OF TRUTH the BEST
