North Georgia Winter Cycling League

New for 2007-08 Winter Cycling League please go to this link to keep up with the happens of the NGWCL

Thanks Dustin for taking this on and organizing it for us all!!!!

Below is info from 2006

What is it all about? This will be a series of approximately ten rides used to build endurance by riding tempo in the north Georgia area. (Habersham, Hall, and White counties) Everyone is welcome to participate from beginner to pro, but be advised that there are very few flat roads in this area.

Where do the rides start? There are a lot of great rides in this area so we will start in different locations to offer ten different routes. Each route will have a map and will be posted on www.habershambicycles.com web site in advance of the upcoming ride.

Is Sponsoring our prize envelope: The contents of the envelope are an assortment of coupons for ice cream and milk from a premium dairy, Mayfield Dairy Farms our series sponsor. At the North Georgia Winter Cycling League we ride until the cows come home.

Start locations and maps can be found by clicking on the date links below.

January 27, 2007:   The Northeast Georgia Carpet Lake Burton Loop departs from the Clarkesville Square at 12 PM. A very scenic loop! In order to finish in time all we may be seeing a lot of pain. Midpoint sprint on 197 and a final attack zone coming back into Clarkesville. Check the map.

Report for Jan 27th

Look out boys the Meatgrinder is closing the gap. He stands a chance of getting on the podium provided he does not crash and suffer a points penalty. There is a two way tie for second place between Andy Big Motor bracket and Scott Landis-Hefner so there is no third place. Andy and Dustin claimed AZ positions this week so the sprint jersey goes to Rielly Dude I have a Question for You Mahon.

We are moving Baron Von Brackett's Mountian route to 2/10. Instead this weekend we will do the circut loop starting from Airial Tire at 12:30 PM.

Joe B.

February 3, 2007:   We will ride a circut course for 75 miles with a sprint on every lap. The course will be 197-Camp Creek-Rock Road-123. The intermediate sprint line will be at the elementary school on 123. On the final AZ we will come back to the Cornelia city park for the good ole Tuesday Night Throw Down finish at the CLS. Points on every Sprint and the final Attack Zone.

Report for Feb 3rd

February 10, 2007:   The Baron Von Bracket Train Ride departs from the Clarkesville Square at 12 PM. The Baron likes to climb and this ride has plenty, around 12,000' of elevation gain. Of course that means it has a lot of downhill since we end up back at the start! Almost everyone's favorite downhill is included on this loop, Unicoi Gap. Thank goodness it is winter so the grins from this downhill will have less bugs in the teeth.

Report for Feb 10th

February 17, 2007  Canceled

We are canceling the WCL for 2/17/07 so that the team can participate in the Bone Shaker Time Trial that day in Dallas, Georgia on the Silver Comet Trail. Register early! The trail is on an old RR bed and has a very slight incline which you feel on the return trip. This is an out and back TT course. The steepest incline is the start ramp where they hold you up before you take off.

When do the rides start? The first ride starts on Saturday December 2, 2006 at 1 PM and continue on Saturdays at the same time through February 17, 2007. There will be a mass start at 1 PM after a sign in at the start location. The first ride will be a 50 mile ride and each week we will add 5 more miles. Our last two rides will be the longest at 80 miles. We will generally ride regardless of the weather conditions.

What will be the pace for the ride? The pace will be 15-17 mph for most of the ride. Starting at 1 PM we will need to maintain enough speed to finish before dark.

Is this a competitive ride? There will be a sprint on each ride and a regrouping afterwards. Sprints will vary each week. Some sprints will be contested by juniors only, or women only, or riders over 40, otherwise all riders are eligible for the sprint. Check the ride map beforehand to see where the sprint is and who is sprinting that week.

Will there be attack zones? Yes. Each ride will have a predetermined attack zone marked in green on the map. The zone will be five miles long and like the sprints we will regroup afterwards. The speeds during the attack zone will be competitive. If you plan on riding hard during the attack zone get up front beforehand and if you do not plan on attacking the zone relax, we will regroup afterwards.

Will the rides be supported? We hope to have a SAG vehicle. These will be ride at your own risk events. BYOB, bring your own bike, and expect it and its rider to last the whole ride. There will be turn off locations for riders having difficulty marked on the route. The longer rides will have time limits. If you have not reached a marked point by a certain time you will be required to ride the shorter route. There will be a store stop on each ride.

How much does it cost to ride? There is no entry fee.

Are these rides similar to the WBL rides in Athens? Hopefully we have flattered the WBL organizers by copying their format very closely. The exception is slower and shorter rides, and we will not have a pirate’s bounty for sprint and attack zone winners.

Is there a point system? Yes. You earn pts for each mile you ride, sprints and attack zone placing earn extra points. Prizes are too be determined for the overall winner.
